Summary

This was a worthy follow-up to the previous book and it also takes place in Florida。 I loved the gruesome mystery of the feet and learning what was behind it was definitely psychological horror。 I also liked that it was all hands on deck and that Constance (yes, even Constance), Pendergast, and Cold Moon all had their different roles to play。 But there were also other good side characters, including the mathematician/scientist。 The Hollywood ending was a bit cheesy, although I have to admit it w This was a worthy follow-up to the previous book and it also takes place in Florida。 I loved the gruesome mystery of the feet and learning what was behind it was definitely psychological horror。 I also liked that it was all hands on deck and that Constance (yes, even Constance), Pendergast, and Cold Moon all had their different roles to play。 But there were also other good side characters, including the mathematician/scientist。 The Hollywood ending was a bit cheesy, although I have to admit it was fun watching Constance at the end。 The side mystery was a bit odd because it wasn't related at all, and although I liked the resolution of it, I couldn't figure out why they included it。 Overall, this had some of the feelings of the earlier books, but I didn't think it was as well executed。 But I still think it was worth reading and I liked Constance a little bit more in this one。 。。。more

Dang! Another fantastic thriller from P & C。 Great to see Pendergast and Coldmoon's roles slightly reversed here。 The ending was more explosive than Two Graves。 Can't believe that I started with Relic in April 2021。。。and now about to begin with Bloodless soon。 Looking forward。 Dang! Agent Pendergast, Agent Coldmoon, and Constance get themselves in way over their heads while investigating an odd case with feet washing up on an island。 Twists and turns will keep you engaged but beware。 There are a few really graphic details that I skipped over。 I'm to soft for those。 Agent Pendergast, Agent Coldmoon, and Constance get themselves in way over their heads while investigating an odd case with feet washing up on an island。 Twists and turns will keep you engaged but beware。 There are a few really graphic details that I skipped over。 I'm to soft for those。 。。。more

Good readI had sworn off Pendergast for a while。 I didn't like the otherworldly turn he had taken what with the out of body travel, magical appearances etc。 Crooked River had him as a human to my pleasure。 This is a good, fast paced, somewhat gorey tail, and a fun read。If you're a Preston Child fan you're going to like this one。 Good readI had sworn off Pendergast for a while。 I didn't like the otherworldly turn he had taken what with the out of body travel, magical appearances etc。 Crooked River had him as a human to my pleasure。 This is a good, fast paced, somewhat gorey tail, and a fun read。If you're a Preston Child fan you're going to like this one。 。。。more

Gruesome engaging and fast paced。 Make sure you have enough time to read it。 Once engaged not many places to stop before the action begins again。

Another installment in the Pendergast series featuring new "partner", Agent Coldmoon, which finds Pendergast being drawn away from the private Florida island resort where he's relaxing with his ward, Constance, & recuperating from the Mr。 Brokenhearts case into a new & grisly case just miles away on Sanibel & Captiva Islands。 Numerous shoes, all of the same kind, have begun washing up on the beach on Captiva--the only problem is they contain amputated human feet。 The FBI is joining forces with l Another installment in the Pendergast series featuring new "partner", Agent Coldmoon, which finds Pendergast being drawn away from the private Florida island resort where he's relaxing with his ward, Constance, & recuperating from the Mr。 Brokenhearts case into a new & grisly case just miles away on Sanibel & Captiva Islands。 Numerous shoes, all of the same kind, have begun washing up on the beach on Captiva--the only problem is they contain amputated human feet。 The FBI is joining forces with local law enforcement & Coast Guard detail to try to figure out from where these horrific items are originating。 As the numbers of feet grow, it becomes clear this is something that needs careful investigation。 Feelers go out in many directions--the Coast Guard commander is sure they have come from a prison in Cuba after a horrible torture of prisoners, but Pendergast thinks it's much more complicated &, clashing with the Coast Guard, launches his own investigation using local oceanographers to utilize highly technological processes to track the currents in an effort to pinpoint the origin point。 He also has an FBI expert in footwear identification tracking where these identical shoes have been made。 Agent Coldmoon is unwillingly drawn into the search & is tracking down identification of the victims which leads him to Guatemala & Mexico while Constance, not interested in the FBI investigation & peeved her vacation has been interrupted, finds her own mystery to solve when the Victorian beach house they've rented on Captiva is believed to be haunted by the ghost of the former owner who was murdered there, even though his body was never found。 Could the strange tapping sounds she hears be the ghost? This was another interesting case full of detail & description & information, the investigation starting out a bit slow, but then picking up speed as more progress is made & escalating into fast-paced danger for everyone involved。 As always, I start reading a bit at a time until the action picks up, & then it's a straight read through to the end to find out what happens。 I enjoyed it。 。。。more

As ever, entertaining page turner。 Is it just my imagination or is there more quick-witted humor in the later books?

Constance was less annoying, but still adds little。 Do the authors just WANT to annoy people? Further it has a bit more of a political slant。 Just write a fiction! Pendergast was watery and they spent too much time on ColdMoon。 Not a single utterance of a habit that is terribly difficult to break。 Where is Pendergast? It was so watered down that I actually read a book in between and only used this one as a filler while waiting for my library holds。

Brilliant!Another exceptionally well written action/mystery by two of the best authors I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading。 The Pentergast series is addicting and once you start reading you won’t want to put the book down until you’ve read the very last word。 These books are best read in order starting with the book Relic!

I realize now that Preston & Child books read more like Robert Ludlum than Agathe Christie。 Which isn't a bad thing! 3。75 Can't stop picturing Mikasa as Constance haha I realize now that Preston & Child books read more like Robert Ludlum than Agathe Christie。 Which isn't a bad thing! 3。75 Can't stop picturing Mikasa as Constance haha 。。。more

As usual, another hit for the Preston/Childs writing team! A very involved plot line, once again highlighting the ineptness of law officials on strange cases。 Pendergast gets drawn into the case after being smoothly manipulated by ADC Pickett。 Agent Coldmoon gets involved after being smoothly manipulated by Pendergast。 Neither can resist a strange and interesting case。 Things continue to get more involved and Constance gets to play a major role。

Diane

The book had less subtelty than some of the other Pendergast novels - it became one long chase。 And the crime, when discovered, was so horrific it was hard to listen to。

Excellent readA bit of Hercule Poirot encased in a fabulously wealthy southern gentleman who also happens to be an FBI agent。 Preston and Child deliver the goods covered in exciting suspense and a bit of blood and gore。 Highly recommended。

I don’t know……why I like this book。 Listen, the premise of this mystery is so improbable as to be ridiculous。 The ending is straight out of an action movie, it lacks the depth, history, gravitas, of the earlier installments, but still, it’s Pendergast, Constance, Coldmoon ( poor man), and the addition of the lovely Perlman。 Will we see him again? I think I’m a fan。 Escapism nicely done。

Lizzielulu

Excellent narration by Jefferson Mays!

I’m afraid the thrill is gone。 I love Agent Pendergast but while he excels in the earlier mysteries, these later ones border on being less creepy and exciting and more ridiculous。 Agent Coldmoon has potential and seeing his growth as a character will be interesting。 I hope。

If you aren’t already acquainted with Special Agent Aloysius Xengu Leng Pendergast, stop reading this and start at the very beginning with “Relic”。 My late wife used to and I still view Agent Pendergast as one of the best characters ever written。 This installment is more of what we read these guys for。 It’s exactly what I expected it to be。

I have been a fan from Book #1 and this book #19 is not as riveting as the earlier books。 Think of the mystery in the museum。 Those earlier books were chilling。 This story about the feet washing up on the beach didn’t have the same chill。 Pendergast seemed lethargic and not very interested in the beginning but the plot picked up when Pendergast rebelled under the Commander’s attempt to control everyone and everything about the investigation。 Constance Greene was superb and the side trips with Co I have been a fan from Book #1 and this book #19 is not as riveting as the earlier books。 Think of the mystery in the museum。 Those earlier books were chilling。 This story about the feet washing up on the beach didn’t have the same chill。 Pendergast seemed lethargic and not very interested in the beginning but the plot picked up when Pendergast rebelled under the Commander’s attempt to control everyone and everything about the investigation。 Constance Greene was superb and the side trips with Coldmoon added to the story。 I hope the next book can get back on track with some of the past storylines。 This one was not quite up to the skill level of Childs and Preston but it was still worth the read。 。。。more

Generally I enjoy the Pendergast novels but this one was a disappointment。 To me the entire premise was too far fetched even for a whodunit。 The writing itself was ok。 Only reccommended for the biggest fans。

Another outstanding pendrick as Pendergast novel! The pace was consistently riveting an attention holding。 The return of characters from previous novels was delightful。 From Constance Green to Coldmoon and reporters Smithback, everyone was needed for the successful outcome in outcome in this story line。 I particularly enjoyed the prominence of Constance Green and the role she played in saving the day。 The evilness behind the mystery was clear and astonishing but plausible。 I'm looking forward to Another outstanding pendrick as Pendergast novel! How did all the feet clad in green shoes end up on a Captiva Island, FL beach? Pendergast investigates with his partner, Coldmoon。 Far reaching - China, Key West, Central America, goverment agencies。 Kind of creepy。。。

implausible and political I’d give this book one star, however the first half of it had potential to be a good story。 The authors chose to take the story in a political direction and the end of it was completely implausible。 The side story was less believable than some Scooby Doo episodes I’ve watched。 From the liberal turn the story took, I suppose the authors figured it didn’t have to be believable as the intended audience is used to being spoon fed bs。

Cathryn

What the fresh hell is this… Seriously though a very good book。
